Doctor’s Orders

June 30,2014

Last week the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a new policy recommendation stressing the multiple benefits of reading aloud to young children.  The AAP now encourages pediatricians to advise parents that reading aloud to children—and discussing the words and pictures in age-appropriate books— strengthens language skills, promotes literacy development, and nurtures parent-child relationships.  Loving, nurturing interactions with parents, such as during daily story time, are important for both cognitive and social-emotional development. With so many good reasons to make reading a daily habit, parents of young children would be well advised to listen to the AAP and follow doctor’s orders.
